"The Hexamer General Surveys were prepared by Ernest Hexamer (and, it is suspected, with the assistance of diverse hands) between 1866 and 1895 and consists of, as near as can be determined 2855 numbered plates depicting various industrial and commercial properties.
Industrial properties are such companies as breweries, textile mills and print works, sugar refineries, petroleum yards, dye and chemical works, sawing and planing mills and meat houses. Commercial properties are large farm estates, freight yards, grain elevators and warehouses, movie theatres and concert halls, office buildings, stores, hotels and trolley barns.
Other properties include a university, newspaper building, a racetrack, a prison, an insane asylum and a hospital and almshouse.
By far the overwhelming majority are industrial and of these the textile mills predominate." - From A Consolidated Name Index to the Hexamer General Surveys by Joyce A. Post, Philadelphia, 1974
