Another local author - this one sold the movie rights to his book! Earlier this week I found that Lisa Regan was from Danville PA, and her Josie Quinn Detective series has many references to our area. Then someone messaged me to tell me that author Tom Bailey (a professor at Susquehanna) wrote a book in 2006 and sold the movie rights! It was intended to star Glen Close and James Franco, but the movie was never made. You can, however, still read the book. :-) I'm told it is set in the Adirondacks, but there are references to Selinsgrove that locals will recognize.
Published in 2006 by Penguin Random House publishing, The Grace That Keeps The World is set in the Adirondacks. It is "a story about family, community, and the shared values that underlie and sustain human relationships. And ultimately, it is a tale of profound loss, human fallibility, and the love—romantic, neighborly, or familial—that can sometimes blur our line of vision."
Author Tom Bailey lives in Selinsgrove Pa, where he teaches Creative Writing at Susquehanna University.
The novel began as a short story, based on a real life incident, and was later expanded into a full length book. I have not yet read this myself (it's on my to read pile!) but I am told there are many references to Susquehanna University and professors there, that locals may easily recognize.
In 2007, Michael Aldrich purchased the rights to write a movie adaptation of The Grace That Keeps This World. Aldrige's first screenplay to appear in theatres was Cleaner, staring Samuel L. Jackson. He cowrote Coco, for Pixar. Currently he is working with Netflix, on an adaptation of The Chronicles Of Narnia. His adaptation of The Grace That Keeps This World was intended to star Glenn Close, James Franco and Brit Marling.
Sadly, the movie appears to never have been made. But you can still read the book, along with the authors second novel, Cotton Song.
