Growing up here in the Susquehanna Valley, there are so many things we take for granted.  Plenty of Farmers Markets, Loads of History,  A Festival For Everything (we even have festivals for the first and last Fridays of the month) and plenty of places to bike, hike, and kayak.   We have dozens of thrift stores, SO many waterfalls, and  charming covered bridges and one room school houses. 

But that's not all.  We have a lot of unique, weird, and interesting traditions, events, and spots, that most locals have visited or done at least once.

A Susquehanna Valley Summer Bucket List

1. Visit Knoebels - Admission is free!  See the bald eagles (located behind the museum area), tour the museum, even catch a show, all for free. Then ride the Phoenix and have a tiger tail (deep fried pretzel, rolled in cinnamon sugar and drizzled with chocolate and caramel) at Phoenix Junction. Knoebels

2. Swim in the ice cold water of Half Way Dam.  Too cold for you?  Here are six natural swimming areas in our area.

3. Hike Ricketts Glen.  If you are not up to the full trail, Adam's falls is a short distance from the parking area.  Here's a list of more waterfalls, by county, to visit in PA!

4. Have a Teaberry Ice Cream Cone.  Eders in Montoursville is one of our favorite creameries, but you can find teaberry as the flavor of the week many places throughout the summer.  Teaberry, the most popular ice cream in PA.

5. Catch lightening bugs.  12 Things You Didn't Know About Lightening Bugs

6. Have a fish sandwich at the Fence.  If you put your kayaks in at the Milton Island, you can pull up on the shore beside The Fence, have dinner, then kayak on down to the boat launch a bit further down river. Kayaking From Milton To Lewisburg.

7. Bike the Lewisburg Rail Trail.  A 9.5 mile scenic trail running from Lewisburg to Mifflinburg.  (You can make a quick side jaunt up to the purple cow for ice cream).  There are parking areas in several areas along the trail, as well as a cafe and bike shop in Lewisburg. BVRT Website.   There is also a nice bike trail in Williamsport, which connects to the one through Indian Park in Muncy.  Places To Bike.

8. Ride the Hiawatha .  There is a  $5 floating classroom series throughout the summer, in addition to regular cruises, theme cruises, and dinner cruises.  Hiawatha Website.

9. Attend A Minor League Baseball Game, at the Historic Bowman Field in Williamsport Pa.  Find The Crosscutters Schedule here. https://www.milb.com/williamsport

10. Watch A Movie Outside.  There's the Pike Drive In Theatre in Montgomery Pa, and the Point Drive In in Northumberland Pa. Also, many of our local towns have free movies each month, shown in local parks.

The Beaver Run (Amish Run) Consignment Auction

The Beaver Run Consignment sale is now held ONCE a year.

The Spring Sale is held the 3rd week in April

In 2026, that will be April 18th

The Fall Sale is typically the first Saturday In September

HOWEVER, the fall sale is no longer the same sale. The first annual "Washingtonville Benefit Auction"  was held beginning Sept. 10th 2022 . This is NOT the Beaver Run Amish School sale, and it did  not have furniture, livestock, nor poultry.   It is a similar style sale, otherwise, but was much smaller.   I have not yet heard if the sale will be held again 2026.

Finding Places To Eat

Yelp.  Yelp is my go to when traveling, for finding restaurants.  However, lately I am finding it harder to find the unique places, the diner and dives, among the bigger chains.  Still, I never plan a trip without checking it.

Tonight's plan was to eat at Bootleg Bbq, then do an escape room at Williamsport Escapes. We got to Bootleg, there's a sign in the window that says "closed for vacation, be back August 17th". It's October... not sure if they are permanently closed or what is happening there. A quick scan of yelp, and we headed to Sinners & Saints speakeasy. Fun little place! Not a quick place though... 30 minutes later, we asked them to make our order to go. Headed to the Escape room.. We did Area 51. It was fantastic. Well thought out, good puzzles, nice flow. Very much on par with Bloomsburg. We will definitely go back. Came home & ate our take out - and it too was fabulous! We'll definitely return there too, as long as we aren't in a hurry. Fun night!
