A list of our favorite places to hike in the central Susquehanna Valley - and beyond.
===================
See a unique rock, explore abandoned bunkers, see a waterfall, enjoy incredible vistas and learn about vernal pools, and take a road trip to an incredible trail of 1,000 steps built by miners for their daily commute to work. A look at 5 of my favorite hikes:

More Of A Walk Than A Hike
====================
Above Hughesville One of my absolute favorite places to hike. Well maintained trails. |
Old Alvira, The Bunkers But it's so much more than just the old bunkers.. several ponds, beautiful fields of flowers - and many, many trails |
Washingtonville, PA I haven't hiked here in years, because they do not allow dogs. But I used to love the trails here, when it was owned by PP&L, years ago. |
in McElhattan can be as easy, or difficult, as you would like. There's a nice flat trail, and then there are more difficult trails as well |
State Game Lands #58 Near Mainville, Columbia Co. |
The Falls On Lost Creek Near McClure Pa |
J. Manly Robbins Trail Danville Rail Trail |
|
Near State College. (sometimes a little overgrown, and watch for broken glass - but a pretty short easy walk for the most part) |
|
ROAD TRIP A REALLY neat place to see, with a variety of stonehenge type stone structures. |

Moderate
More than a walk in the park, but not TOO difficult
==============
Near Montoursville |
Near Tivoli/Picture Rocks The walk TO Ticklish Rock is easy. But once you get to the top, you look down to spot this, and to get to it is a short scramble down the side. I still think it's pretty easy, but others have disagreed, so I'm putting it here out of an abundance of caution.
|
Rickets Glen Falls Trail Steep in places, but a well maintained trail with lots of steps. Long and tiring maybe, but not difficult, and with 22 waterfalls in the loop.. its well worth the effort! Closed in the winter, usually reopens mid April. |
Near Blossburg the first falls is a simple walk, to see the second is a bit of a scramble down the hill and hike up the side of the creek. Not too difficult. Be sure to drive up the road a bit and see the brilliant bright blue acid mine treatment ponds too. |
Near Laporte Pa Pretty hike, great swimming hole, and a waterfall nearby |
Ridge Trail Lewisburg, Pa Parts of this are very flat and easy, but the switchback trail can be a bit more challenging. |
Lycoming Co, Pa A large variety of trails - everything from wide meadow, to rocky climbs. Nothing too difficult, a lot of moderate. |

Difficult
Steep, Rocky, Or Just Plain Difficult
==============
Abandoned Plane Crash Site on Mountain near McElhatten There is no trail, and nothing about this is easy. It can be very dangerous, should not be attempted unless you are familiar with this kind of hike. |
A bit of a road trip, but such a unique, historical, hike! Stunning views. |
The Allegheny Airlines Flight 371 Crash Site This is another hike with no trail - just make your way down over the rocks to the site. It's not as difficult as the site in McElhattan, but the rocky terrain is not easy to walk down. |
