Market Street Lewisburg, Through The Decades

The first full building shown here is 100 Market Street.  The same building still stands there today.  Next is 44  Market Street, Then the Presbyterian Church, which is 18 Market Street, then 17 Market Street, and the house on the corner is 15 N. Water Street (today, the Packwood house).  Beside the Packwood house you can see the standpipes.

Clip from the 1884 map of Lewisburg.  River is to the left.
Notice there is only one standpipe.  It was completed shortly before this map was made.  The second one was added in 1897, so we know the photo above was taken after 1897.

The American House
Looking down Water Street, at the back of what is today the Packwood House Musuem.

At the northwest corner of Market & Water, what is now the Packwood house began as a log tavern built by John Pollock sometime between 1795 & 1799
Part of the original tavern walls can be seen inside the Packwood House.
By 1838 it was called the Washington House (there was another Washington House at Market & 2nd St), then Spread Eagle House, and in 1848, American House.  It was at this time that it was enlarged and "vastly improved". In December of 1886 the hotel was sold as public sale.  In 1892 it was converted into a 3 unit apartment.  The Fetherston family purchased the building in 1938.  They remodeled the entire building back into one home, naming it the Packwood House, in honor of the Fetherston Estate in England.  When Edith Fetherson died in 1972, her will established the Fetherston Foundation, with the mission of turning the home into a museum, encompassing Edith's collection of Central Pennsylvania historical and cultural artifacts.
The Museum opened in 1976.

101 Market Street - The Lewisburg Inn (Today, Brasserie Louis)

The building that is today Brasserie Louis was the first building to have running water in Lewisburg.  It began as a home  built for a local school teacher, in 1825.  J. Merrill Lynn then purchased it, and finished building the structure that stands there today. In 1930 it opened as a boarding house,  and from 1955-2000 it was the Lewisburg Inn.

About the Foodtown Building
"The store building was built in 1831, by John Walls. He operated a dress goods and dry goods store ( John Walls & Sons, Wilson & Walls, several name changes) there, until his death, in 1891. His son, William C.Walls (Billy Walls) continued the store, until his death, in 1941. Billy Walls was also the bank president, at Lewisburg Trust and Safe Deposit Co.. In 1905, Walls rented some store space to the Buffalo Valley Telephone Co., for their office. Later, the store became Keeler's Bookstore, then The University Bookstore, an Army recruiting station, then Matrey's Foodtown. My father purchased the building from Billy Walls' daughter, in 1965" - Paul Matrey

1919  Welcome Home Parade

This light was removed in 1948.
According to historian Paul Matrey, when the streets were first paved, the brick pattern showed through the pavement.  I've also read that there's a pattern in the brick under the street light here, that indicated a water trough had been here before the light was placed.

On Sunday December 27th, the Watkins Building in Lewisburg, which held the J.J. Newberry store, was destroyed by fire.  The building also held 14 apartments, the fire leaving 19 people homeless.

Two months after the  1959 fire at Newberrys, Mr. Watkins purchased the former JPM company building at 232 Market Street as a temporary location for the Newberry Store, until a new store could be built.  In June of that year, Watkins purchased the Baker Building, which was at the time occupied by Rea & Derrick.  The Baker building was torn down, Rea & Derrick moved to a building "farther west on the same block".  "Combined site of the former Watkins and Baker building will give the Newberry firm a Market Street footage measuring 104 feet"

"After fire circa 1959 destroyed the building, W.W.Watkins added that adjoining building to the West in order to enlarge the site and developed the current building after securing a long term lease with J.J.Newberry." - Paul Matrey

  1. Very interesting indeed. Thank you! Do you know of any historic photos or postcards featuring North 4th Street, Lewisburg? There are several interesting homes between St. Mary and Market Street; it would be fascinating to see period images of them. For example, Senator Bates' house (1899) is on N. 4th, as are both of John Stannert's houses (1861 and 1889, side by side), etc. And Prof. Murphy's c.1820 home is supposedly one of the oldest still standing in the boro. Thanks again. Sincerely, Rick Benjamin

  2. Hi! I'm wondering if you've come across information about Stuck's restaurant, Mowery's store, and Reeser’s store. At least the latter two should have been in the 600 block of Market Street, near Venari's pizza, Town Tavern, and Bull run restaurant (though likely on the north side of the street). This would have been c. 1900. I'm trying to locate their addresses. Thank you!

  3. Thanks for your post on old Lewisburg. My great grandfather was Harry Stahl, who I think had a store on Market St
