Pick Your Own Apples, At Northhilll Orchard 636 Sholl Rd, Winfield PA https://www.facebook.com/northhillorchard |
This past week-end we were near Lewisburg with a couple of hours to kill, so we drove over to Northhill Orchard to check out the apple picking.
Although they have a Winfield address, it feels closer to New Berlin. When you pull in, there are no apple trees to be seen. At the building, you can sample cider, purchase pumpkins, apples, and cider, and fill out the waiver to pick your own apples. Then you hop in your car and follow a lead car up the hill to the orchards.
They have a variety of varieties here - including my favorite, smokehouse. Some of the varieties:
JonaGold, Ida Red, Mutsu/Crispin, Stayman Winesap, Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Empire, Macintosh, Fuji, Rome, Smokehouse, and Cortland
It's $15 a box, which is approximately half a bushel. You can put whatever combination of varieties you want in your box - including pears, if you can find them.
It does not take long at all to pick one box of apples. We took our time, walked up and down the rows, enjoyed the view, picked 4 or 5 different varieties.. and it still took us less than an hour from the time we signed the waiver, until we returned, paid, and headed out.
The owners are VERY nice and told us to stay as long as we liked - to enjoy the sunset.
They have buckets you can pick into, so you do not have to carry your box up and down the rows. Each row is marked with the varieties of apples you will find there, and we were given a good explanation of where to find everything when we arrived on the hill. There's a porta potty on the hill as well - and it was the cleanest public bathroom I have ever seen.
Dan's looking forward to apple dumplings later this week. :-)
