On May 5th & 6th 1818 David Yoder had the town of New Columbia surveyed and laid out in streets and lots. Originally the town had 132 lots on the south side of Main Street.  Later, lots were added on the north street of Main, from what was formerly part of the John Fisher Farm.  In 1868 there were 59 homes & businesses, a sawmill on Dog run, cabinet and blacksmith shops, a hotel and a church.  along Main street was the B&G lumber shop, William Blind's carriage shop, and the Union Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Located at River Road and Main Street, the store was owned by William Dennis.  When Dennis died in 1889, William Fisher, an employee, took over the business. (The Dennis name can still be made out on the building, in this photo)
New Columbia's post office was in this building for approximately 17 years.
