Was There A Tunnel At Fort Augusta?

In Sunbury, more than any other local town I research, there are numerous stories of secret tunnels.  Tunnels from the prison, tunnels from various homes, and tunnels from Fort Augusta.

Was there really a tunnel from Fort Augusta to the river?  I do not know, I can only tell you what old newspapers and periodicals had to say about it.

Normal S. Engle claimed to have seen the tunnel in 1888, after the flood washed out part of the bank.

Mrs. Amelia Gross was very involved with the DAR.  It was due to her efforts that the DAR erected a monument there, and for a time, the group considered purchasing the site.  In their 1912 magazine, an article states that "since the old fort became the property of the present owner, an underground passage to the river had been discovered, and numerous relics found..."

"Close by is an old well, which tradition says, led underground to the shore of the Susquehanna River"
