Hubler Covered Bridge (The Penitentiary Bridge) at Lewisburg

 Hubler Covered Bridge
40.986050, -76.927862
Located on Federal Prison Property

In extreme disrepair, and unlikely to survive much longer without immediate intervention.
Which unfortunately, it unlikely.

1935, from the Davis Collection

A metal gate in the center separates the private property side from the federal prison side.

Constructed in 1850, the Hubler covered bridge spans Buffalo Creek, connecting private property to the Lewisburg Penitentiary.  The bridge is closed to traffic.

The bridge is 33 feet long and 15 feet wide, and of kingpost truss design.
The Kingpost Truss is the oldest truss design. It is primarily used for bridges with spans less than 30 feet.

Although labeled only as "Lewisburg Bridge", this bridge featured on a covered bridge dish towel appears to be the Hubler bridge.

See the entire dish towel, and poem it references, here:

In 1971, The Lewisburg National Bank was giving away water color paintings of the bridge to new customers.
