Montoursville Roller Mills

The Montoursville Roller Mills

Located along the Loyalsock Creek, the Montoursville Roller Mills were later known as the Hayes Mill and The Hayes-Picadoe Mill.

1885 Advertisement in Boyd's Directory

"In 1884 he [William Hayes] purchased the Montoursville rolling mills, in company with Clarence Wheeland and his son, John Hayes. Mr. Wheeland sold his interest to Mr. Meyer in April, 1887, and two years later Mr. Meyer sold his interest to Mr. Pidcoe, and they have since conducted the business under the firm name of Hayes, Pidcoe & Company." - Meginness Biographies

"The large flouring mill of Hayes, Pidcoe & Company, near the creek, is operated on an extensive scale and turns out a large amount of flour annually." - Meginness, 1892

In the 1920s, the mill was converted into apartment, known as the Walnut Lane Apartments.

Police Barracks, during the 1946 flood

For nearly a decade, between 1940 and 1950, State Police Troop D is listed at Walnut Lane in Montoursville.  The barracks was housed inside the old mill building.

Today, the street leading to the old mill, Walnut Lane, no longer exists. Today, if you take the bike path from the green bridge, traveling north along the creek, you may be traveling roughly the same route as the old Walnut Lane.

John Hayes owned the mill at once time.  His home on 145 Broad Street still stands, minus the wrap around porch.  In the photo above, you can see the mill in the background, behind his home.

The mill can be seen here, on the left,  in this old birds eye view photo showing the covered bridge across the Loyalsock.

  1. This is a wonderful piece of history. Could I have permission to share it with SPOOM--the Society for the Preservation of Old Mills?

    1. Absolutely! Share away. The SPOOM bust trip here a few years back was one of my favorite tours

  2. My brother, Adam Sieminski, and his wife came up from DC for that tour. He was president of the Friends of Pierce Mill in DC and has taken miller training.
