When Lewisburg Experienced An Earthquake, 1881

At a little before 4am on February 1 1881, residents from Lewisburg were awakened by a "vibration of their surroundings"
"The houses were shaken, and in some instances, the dishes where even heard to rattle."

The home of Alfred Hayes Esq was one of the residents who was awaked by the heavy vibration.  It was also felt by Mr William Nesbit and others in East Lewisburg, and as far away as Smoketown, two miles to the west.

Several residents investigated the area, thinking it possible that there had been an explosion, but none was found.

The chance of an earthquake in our area is extremely low, but not unheard of.  There has been one other, in 2013, between 1931 and 2022.
