The Newberry Rail Yard is the largest yard between Harrisburg PA and Buffalo NY.  At one time, it had five railroads serving it.

The first railroad through Newberry came in 1854. The New York Central, Erie (Later Erie-Lackawana) and S&NY all ran through Newberry at once time.

A track off Newberry yard At Trenton Avenue is referred to as the "Sunny", as it was once reserved for Susquehanna & New York Railroad Trains (S&NY). The S&NY went out of business in 1943.

"At present, during the peak or traffic movement, the Newberry Junction Gateway handles 65,000 carloads of freight a month, while the normal average is approximately 45,000 cars a month.  If the present rate of tonnage handled at Newberry Junction continues the rest of the year, 8,000,000 tons of freight will have passed over this route during 1923"  Elizabeth Echo December 1923

"On Sunday last Engineer Fox, Conductor Henry, H.D. Seely, fireman, of the B.C.R.R., brought 132 cars from Newberry Junction to Jersey Shore Junction. This is the longest train ever taken over the road. Engine 12 did the work"

The Reading Yard at Newberry

On October 6th 1958, the Reading Railroad car and diesel shop was destroyed by fire, causing an estimated one million dollars damage.  Two firemen were slightly injured fighting the blaze. Workmen rolled several pieces of equipment from the shop, averting further damage. The long narrow building was gutted by flames, and collapsed. T he nearby New York Central Railroad shop was not damaged by the fire.

Old Office Building, Newberry Junction

Old Engine House, Newberry Junction

On June 1 1970, Reading Co opened a new freight station and trucking depot at Newberry Junction.  The Trucking Depot was leased to Reading Transportation Co, a subsidiary of the railroad company. The new facility replaced the 88 year old freight house, in the center of Williamsport.  The property, which included the old Williamsport Passenger station, was purchased by the cities redevelopment Authority in 1969.  The Passenger station, also built in 1882, was closed in 1950.

In 1873 this station was on the north side of the tracks at Depot Street (at that time Depot Street ended at the station) (GPS: 41.234034,-77.051218).
