The Rupert Covered Bridge

Rupert Covered Bridge, Between Rupert and Bloomsburg

The Rupert bridge was built in 1847 by Jesse W. Beard, at a cost of $1,637.00, It was named after the nearby village, which was settled by Leonard Rupert in 1788. Rupert established a ferry across the river and his home became a popular stopping off place for travelers.

The 185 feet span Rupert Covered Bridge crosses Fishing Creek.

The bridge was repaired in 1973.

In September of 1994, a split was found in a support  beam.  An additional inspection found that the bridge had moved downstream, and some of the joints had separated by as much as 5 inches, making the span nearly a foot longer than when it opened in 1847.

The bridge was closed for the next 6 years, not reopening until May 2001, after it was refurbished.

The work included two new piers, and steel beams to support the structure.

The original contract stated that the bridge would be open by October 27th 2000, but Lycoming Supply, the contractor, was late in ordering the steel beams.
