Sulouff Bros Shoe Store

Sulouff Bros. Shoe Store, 229 Market Street Sunbury Pa

J. Arthur Sulouff, and Nevin Sulouff.  Sister Pearl was also involved in the operations, particularly after J.A. opened a new store in Lewisburg Pa.  The three were the children of Oliver Sulouff, and grandchildren of Jacob Sulouff, who had also been a shoemaker.

1921

Years ago, I came across a sign in Callahan's Antique store in Montoursville.  It was a large, pale blue sign, for Sulouff Shoe Store.  To this day I regret not buying it, but at the time, it was simply not in my budget.  I'm not a direct descendent of the owner, but he was a distant relation.

In 1927, Sulouff Brothers Shoes was owned by J. Arthur & Nevin Sulouff - brothers.
Their sister Pearl was also listed as part of the business.

James Arthur Sulouff was the proprietor of the Sulouff Shoe store in Lewisburg, beginning in 1932.
March 1932

"Prior to that time, he had operated the Sunbury shoe store of Sulouff Brothers, now conducted by a brother and sister, during the period following it's establishment by him in 1910."

1934

J.A. Sulouff was born September 1 1899, the son of Oliver and Amelia Sulouff.  He married Maud Lee Flemming, of Tennessee, in 1930.

Maud worked along side her husband in their business, and in 1936, her knowledge of shoes won her a trip to California.

J. Arthur was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Sunbury Lodge 22 Free and Accepted Masons, and the American Legion Post at Montandon, having been a veteran of World War I.

J. A. Sulouff died January 28th 1948, age 58.  He is buried in Lewisburg Cemetery.  The shoe store in Lewisburg continued, after his death.

1917

Oliver Sulouff, J.A.'s father,  was a teacher, and carpenter, according to census records.  But his father,  J.A.'s grandfather, was Jacob Sulouff 1818-1885 [married Lydia Burns].  Jacob was also a shoemaker.  The 1877 Atlas of Perry, Juniata and Mifflin counties lists Jacob as a shoemaker, on 16 acres .  The 1880 Census again shows Jacob's occupation as Shoemaker.  Jacob Sulouff and Lydia Burns were my 4x great grandparents.
