Ice Going Out - Watsontown,

February 15th & 16th, Watsontown Pa
Note the Ferry, to the right in the above photo.

In January of 1920, the Mount Carmel Item reported that the river had been frozen for 39 days.  During the winter of 1917/1918, the Susquehanna was covered with ice for a period of 68 days, and the record winter was from December 20 1871 to March 23 1872 - 98 days.

"Ice Going Out Feb 15-16 at Watsontown PA"

What year was this?
There was a big ice flood in 1904, along the North Branch of the River.

However, Caulkins had his studio in Watsontown in 1917 through at least 1920.

Based on a 1918 article in the Daily Item about the ice thawing on February 12th 1918, with these photos dated February 15th-16th - my best guess is these photos are from 1918.

This photo is labeled "cold storage"

In January 1918, the ice was 27 inches thick on the North Branch of the Susquehanna.
[Watsontown is along the West Branch, but nearby]

In February of 1918, there were plans to dynamite the ice, to break it up.
