I attended the Red Bank School from 1949 to it's closing in 1953. I had Claude Weiser as teacher for the 1949-1950, and 1950-1951 school year, and then Mary Dieffenderfer for the 1951-1952, and 1952-1953 school year when it closed. I have many fond memories of attending that school. The interesting thing back then was that, if there was a 1' foot of snow, we HAD school. Today with the slightest bit of snow and school is left out early or cancelled. We carried water daily from the home of M. Leroy Haggy for the drinking water for the day. Outside toilets. Once a week a Mrs. Snyder would come to the school to hold a music session with all the classes. She drove a '41 Ford at the time. A side note on Claude Weiser: he lived at the present day Mifflinburg Library at 5th. and Market Streets, and he walked to the Red Bank School daily, and walked home again at the end of the day, unless he was fortunate enough that somebody would pick him up and give him a ride. The teachers also took care of the fire in the stove in cold weather. Some of the kids walked at least a 1 mile to get there. We are so fortunate that this school was saved from demolition or converted to a house, and kept in it's original condition.
