The Hughesville Roller Mills

Hughesville Roller Mills,  S. Fought & Son
Walnut & Railroad Street, Hughesville Pa
1912-1979

At least, I THINK the photo above is of that mill.  There were a few "Foughts Mills", in various locations, and I am doing my best to keep them all straight.

Built in 1912. A four story addition was added in the 1920s.

In the 1928 Industrial Directory for Pennsylvania, there were two flour mills listed in Hughesville - J.C. Burns, and Hughesville Roller Mills, owned by S. Fought and Son.  The first showed no employees, the second recorded 2.

The Hughesville Roller Mills were destroyed by fire May 20 1979.

Agway Petroleum, with half a dozen fuel storage tanks, was located across from the mill, and Mausteller's gas station was beside the mill, at the time of the fire.

The cause of the fire was ruled spontaneous combustion.  A high moisture dog food, stored in the mill, was thought to have caused other such fires.  It's thought that the sunlight coming through the windows heated up the dog food, causing the fire.

At the time of the 1979 fire, the ill was the larges buckwheat mill still in operation in the state.  Rather than close up shop, the business was continued in the old flour mill along Race and Mill Streets in Hughesville.

In 1928 the mill was purchased by Samuel Fought and his son Raymond.  It operated under  Samuel Fought and Son Mill until Samuel's death in 1944, when it was renamed R.S. Fought & Sons.

Owned by Brothers  Benjamin & Robert in 1979.

When you say "Fought's Mill" around here, it can be VERY confusing.

Foughts Mill built  by Jacob Fought in 1771, on Buffalo Creek in Union County?

Foughts Mill built in 1912, burned down in 1979, in Hughesville?

Or Foughts Mill on Muncy Creek, at the corner of Race & Mill Streets in Hughesville?

Then, to add to the confusion, the mill on Race Street in Hughesville was once called Balls Mill - and of course there is also a town of Balls Mills, with a mill...
