The McEwensville School

The McEwensville Academy was built in 1852, and opened as a  private, classical school.  It still stands today, beside the McEwensville Cemetery, on Academy St.

Dr. Shedden originally opened a subscription school in the foundry building.  He was a distinguished educator, and students came from a considerable distance to attend his school At McEwensville.

In 1869, the building was purchased for public school use.  Prior to this purchase, grade classes were tahg in a small brick building on Green street (adjoining the Lutheran church) and in a building on the corner of Green street and Wesners lane. In the newly purchased building, high school was on the second floor, and grade school was conducted on the first floor.

The desks were fastened to the walls around the room.  The pupils set on high long benches, with out backs, their faces to the wall.

In 1892 the public school was conducted for size months, with 65 students enrolled.  A private term, with 80 students, ran for ten weeks.

In 1883 a motion was made that no more cattle be turned on to the  school ground for pasture, and that the gates be locked.

In 1884 a motion was made that the teachers salary be paid as soon as there was enough money in the treasury to do so.
The McEwensville Fire Company used the building after the school was no longer housed here.

School & Class Photos:

In 1957,  more 100 years after the building was built, it was still being used for the first six grades.  In 1957, it was included on a list of 5 schools that needed to be updated or replaced.
