The Growth Of Milton Was Shown In Pictures - In 1925

To Commemorate the Great Milton Fire Of May 14 1880, The Milton Library, in 1924, had a display of photos showing the growth of Milton.  I can't know for sure exactly what was shown in this display, but based on the descriptions given in the newspaper, this may be what visitors saw.

A Photograph of formerly South Front street, just an old stone grist mill which stood below Mahoning Street on Lime Stone Creek. "Milton was founded in 1792 and derives it's name from this mill.  The town was first called Mill Town, then shortened to Milton."

"The second picture is a water color sketch, a view of Milton from Red Hill, painted in 1850 by John Heyl Raser, a former resident of town."

John Heyl Raser was a druggist in Milton for about 7 years, before taking his family to Reading by Canal boat. There he was also a druggist, in profession. He was always an artist as well, and many of his paintings are quite valuable. His son George later gave the 6 oil paintings to the Milton Library, and another son  bequeathed $1,000 to the library - the family was obviously very fond of the Milton library, even though they only lived here a short time.

"The central picture is a photograph of Milton in 1883 and has a key to prominent buildings."

"The last picture is a birds eye view of Milton in 1919."
The post card above is part of a much larger panoramic photo that can be seen here.  It's a really amazing photo, and you can zoom in and see great details!

"These pictures are a loan collective from public spirited citizens of town."
