Kayaking To The Fence For Dinner

Kayaking To The Fence From The St George St Boat Launch

Normally, if we planned to kayak to Fence, we'd put in at the Milton Island.  That's about a 5 mile trip, and typically takes us, depending on water levels, anywhere from 2-3 hours.  (Floating and chatting, not racing).  Read more about kayaking from Milton to the Fence here: https://susquehannavalley.blogspot.com/2012/06/kayaking-to-fence-from-milton.html

St George Boat Launch, Lewisburg Pa

But recently we only had a few hours free, so we put in at the St George Boat Launch in Lewisburg and kayaked to the Fence, had dinner, then kayaked on down to the boat launch.

It's a REALLY quick float.  I didn't run an app while kayaking for exact mileage, but it is about a mile to the Fence, then another mile to the boat launch.  There may be another half a mile in there somewhere, making it a total of 2.5 miles.

While this is not my favorite stretch of river, it's still a really nice float.  There is a lot of traffic noise,  but it's not too bad, and there always seem to be a lot of motorized boats here, which can be fine, or really annoying, depending on who is operating them.  It's not a stretch where we typically see a lot of wildlife, other than geese and ducks, but it is beautiful.

The Fence is set up for boats to stop in.  There are even steps, to the south of the building, to walk up the bank.  While we were there, a pontoon boat pulled up.  I don't know that that is normally advisable, we have friends, who own a pontoon,  who said absolutely not - but obviously it is sometimes possible, even if not advisable.  :-)

The St George Street boat launch is easy to find.  Just follow St George Street right down the river.  It's a nice wide, easy to use, boat launch.

The Boat Launch is located across the river, on the same side as the Fence.  The GPS coords are:
40.94142, -76.86544.  When the trees are full of leaves, it can be hard to spot from the river, but the water is pretty flat and slow here, it's typically not too difficult to backtrack if need be.
