A Piece From The Towers In South Williamsport - 9/11

A piece of steel from the twin towers sits in front of the fire station, in South Williamsport PA.
The memorial reads:

"This piece of steel from the twin towers is here as a memorial to those whose lived were lost and a testament to the heroism of the members of the New York City fire department, New York police department, and the port authority of NY and NJ that made the ultimate sacrifice on September 11 2001.
MAY WE NEVER FORGET 9/11"

On the 10 year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, there were 7,000 tons of steel from the twin towers stored in a hangar at JFK airport.

A memorial-making program began, running through 2016, in which the Port Authority solicited requests for World Trade Center artifacts from fire and police departments, libraries, small-town museums, military and veteran organizations, and local governments, and  other interested groups.

Fragments were distributed to all 50 states. There are  memorials built around World Trade Center  steel in Canada, Germany, Italy, England and Israel. U.S. military bases in South Korea and Afghanistan received 9/11 steel, as well.

South Williamsports Connection to the Twin Towers

The twin towers were constructed by Karl Kock III,  the grandson of a South Williamsport native.

The Karl Koch Erecting Company was originally founded by Karl Koch I, along with his son, Karl II.  The original Karl Koch had been  born in South Williamsport Pa.
Karl s father Charles was working in the saw mill of Valentine Luppert on May 2 1884, when a fire broke out.  Fleeing the fire, Charles belt caught and he was hit by a piece of shattered saw blade, killing him.  Charles son Karl was just two years old at the time.

  1. Hi my name is John, I found your nice article above this morning. Karl Koch III is my father. Over the years he would tell the story of how his great grandfather Charles was cut in two by a flying sawblade and once visited Williamsport with my sister and found an old article about the sawmill fire and accident in the Williamsport Library. The family attended the Messiah Lutheran Church. (There is a little typo btw :)
