When There Were Palm Trees In Danville

Palm Trees in front of the Danville State Hospital (About 1909?)
In September of 1888, when describing his stay at Danville State Hospital, Ira Milton Lewis wrote:
"There Is also a greenhouse containing a palm tree and many rare plants and flowers. The lawns are well kept and dotted with a great variety of shrubbery. The hospital is surrounded with a series of mountains and hills, giving a great variety of scenery. The admirer of nature can feast bis eyes continually upon its beauties."

It appears the palm trees were brought out to the front lawn, in planters, in the summer months.

The greenhouse at DSH
Throughout the 1960s, garden club tours frequently included a stop at this green house.

"The building was fronted by a lawn of 45 acres, eventually laid out by Donald G. Mitchell, and, being on a slight eminence, overlooked the Susquehanna, which latter supplied the water and received the sewage."
