Reading Local History, 2025

With shelves full of local history books, my goal is to read at least one each month.

Some are more literal history books, others are modern books touching on local people or events.  When possible, I link the books to resources where they can be read free online. Otherwise I use Amazon links - but don't forget to check your local library!

Why I chose it: Rev. Diettrich was a circuit preacher, serving for a time at the Stone Church in old Alvira.  This is his memoir.

What I learned: There were actual, enforceable, laws about behavior in church services.

Overall it was...  not my favorite read.  But it was interesting.

Why I Chose It: It's about the life of Joseph Priestly, of the Priestly House, in Northumberland.

What I Learned: More about Priestly's relationship with our founding fathers

Overall it was...  interesting enough, but I've learned more of interest to me, in a more entertaining manner,  from local talks  about Priestly, and and in visits to the museum in Northumberland.

Why I Chose It: A combination of history & Memoir, with many illustrations, of Sunbury

What I learned: Great descriptions of the ferry, ferry house, and other locations in Sunbury

Overall it was...  good!  A very quick and easy, and entertaining, read.
