Calhoun's 48th Field Artillery Band, Northumberland Pa

Calhoun's 48th Field Artillery Band arrived home on February 15th 1919

They were first unit recruited in Central Pennsylvania to return from Military Service.  The band, which had been transferred more frequently than any volunteer military organization in the state, had a membership of 33, most from Northumberland, with a few musicians coming from Danville, Sunbury, and Bloomsburg.

Nearly 1500 people crowded the station platform at Northumberland, to welcome the bandsmen home. The band had been recruited in September of 1917.  It was under the leadership of First Lieutenant Edward S. Calhoun of Northumberland.

Calhoun Boys Band,

 "His musical Inclination drew him; along with other musicians to institute the Northumberland cornet Band In 1882. 

The name of the band was changed in the 90' to the Northumberland Military Band and later, Calhoun's Band. From Calhoun's Band originated the 103rd Regimental Cavalry Band in 1917, during the World War, and later the Calhoun's Boys Band. " - Obituary of William Calhoun Sr, 1935

The Committee of the Cemetery at Salladasburg, Lycoming county, Pa., will hold a grand festival this week, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, August 28th, 29th and 30th, 1890.  The Salladasburg Cornet Band will  be present and furnish music for the occasion. Grand balloon ascension on Friday evening, and on Saturday afternoon and evening

The Watsontown Mandolin Club

 

Old Mandolin Club at Watsontown

This picture of the old Mandolin club in Watsontown was taken on April 26 1896 when at an Odd Fellows Anniversary Day was celebrate in Watsontown.  All the members of the club are deceased, but Edward Kelmble, who lived on East first street in Watsontown.  The two seated in the front are DeLa Rombach and William Kramer. Those in the second row, left to right, Frank Krum, Seth Michener, and Howard W. Rombach.  In the top row are Oliver Sanders, Edward Kemble, and Frank B. Fisher.(From an early newspaper)
