The party to honor Dr J. Housel on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Housel's Band, was called off due to Housel's ill health.
. Dr Joseph Housel died Six months later on July 4th, 1923.
Dr. Housel began playing in bands while living at Jersey Shore in 1856. During the 1860s he became a member of the "Old Milton Band", of which he was the last surviving member. During the Civil War he led the McEwensville Band, and in 1872 he organized Housel's Watsontown Band. He claimed to be the oldest bandmaster in the state. His instrument of choice was the cornet.
