When Local Banks Had Christmas Clubs

A banner  from the First Milton National Bank Christmas Club.

The first Christmas Club was introduced in 1909, by Markel Landis as the Carlisle Trust Company.  350 customers saved about $28 each that year, receiving their money n December 1 1909.

Banks throughout the early 20th century often gave incentives, such as brass tokens, for opening a Christmas Savings account.  Parents were encouraged to enroll their children in the Christmas Banking Clubs, "to develop self reliance and the saving habit"

Although Christmas clubs do still exist at many banks today, they gradually became less popular by the 1980s. "Falling out of favor" due to low interest rates, and fees for early withdrawls.
