The Allenwood School

The Allenwood High School opened in September of 1910,
"with a large enrollment", according to the Lewisburg Journal.

"The Allenwood school was later graded to include a grammar department, which had a good library by 1898.  In 1909 graduation exercises were held, and a year later a township high school was opened"  -  A Bicentennial History by Charles Snyder

The Allenwood School closed June 1958 and was torn down in 1965.

In 1956 when the Warrior Run Area Joint Schools inspected all of the schools to decide which should remain open and which should be closed, it was decided to close the Allenwood school.

Determining factors included its proximity to the busy highway, the condition of he "privies", problems with the foundation, and the heating methods being a fire hazard.

The school was heated by oil space heaters, with the oil storage tanks stored leaning against the wooden building.

There were no indoor facilities - the outhouses were located to the rear of the building with a pump for washing located between the privies and the school.

The outdoor privies were in poor condition by 1956.

In the 1956 survey, it was also noted that the chalkboards were in rough shape.

The lot was not large enough for a baseball diamond, and the only playground equipment were homemade see-saws.

The survey concluded: "There is nothing about the Allenwood School to recommend its continued use.  The building should be abandoned.”
